Biological Activity

Description Choline chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt used as an additive for animal feed. It is important as a precursor of acetylcholine, as a methyl donor in various metabolic processes, and in lipid metabolism.
In vitro

Choline is a major part of the polar head group of phosphatidylcholine and a major part of another membrane phospholipid, sphingomyelin, which are very important for maintenance of cell structure and function. Choline deficiency in cell culture causes apoptosis or programmed cell death. Betaine or trimethylglycine is derived from choline via an oxidation reaction. Acetylcholine is one of the major neurotransmitters and requires choline for its synthesis. Adequate acetylcholine levels in the brain are believed to be protective against certain types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Choline is also needed for gallbladder regulation, liver function and lecithin (a key lipid) formation. Choline also aids in fat and cholesterol metabolism and prevents excessive fat build up in the liver. Choline has been used to mitigate the effects of Parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia. Choline deficiencies may result in excessive build-up of fat in the liver, high blood pressure, gastric ulcers, kidney and liver dysfunction and stunted growth.

In vivo Choline chloride is of very low acute oral toxicity. The oral LD50 in rats is determined to be between 3150 and 5000 mg/kg bw. Clinical symptoms after application are restlessness, increased frequency of respiration, hypoactivity, convulsions, ruffled coat, staggered gait and dyspnoea. Some animals have diarrhoea and at necropsy in the high dose groups in one study 3 out of 10 rats have inflamed lungs.

Solubility (25°C)

In vitro DMSO 28 mg/mL (200.54 mM)
Water 28 mg/mL (200.54 mM)
Ethanol 28 mg/mL (200.54 mM)

* Please note that Selleck tests the solubility of all compounds in-house, and the actual solubility may differ slightly from published values. This is normal and is due to slight batch-to-batch variations.

Molarity Calculator

Molarity Calculator

Calculate the mass, volume or concentration required for a solution. The Selleck molarity calculator is based on the following equation:

Mass (mg) = Concentration (mM) × Volume (mL) × Molecular Weight (g/mol)

  • Mass

*When preparing stock solutions, please always use the batch-specific molecular weight of the product found on the via label and MSDS / COA (available on product pages).

Dilution Calculator

Dilution Calculator

Calculate the dilution required to prepare a stock solution. The Selleck dilution calculator is based on the following equation:

Concentration (start) x Volume (start) = Concentration (final) x Volume (final)

This equation is commonly abbreviated as: C1V1 = C2V2 ( Input Output )

  • C1

* When preparing stock solutions always use the batch-specific molecular weight of the product found on the vial label and MSDS / COA (available online).

Definitions of molecular mass, molecular weight, molar mass and molar weight:

Molecular mass (molecular weight) is the mass of one molecule of a substance and is expressed in the unified atomic mass units (u). (1 u is equal to 1/12 the mass of one atom of carbon-12)
Molar mass (molar weight) is the mass of one mole of a substance and is expressed in g/mol.
