    Background
Blimp-1/PRDI-BF1, is a 789-amino-acid transcriptional repressor that contains five carboxy-terminal zinc finger motifs mediating sequence-specific DNA binding. It is expressed in activated B cells and sustained in plasma cells, where it functions as a master regulator of terminal B-cell differentiation by repressing genes such as c-myc to halt proliferation and promote plasma cell identity. Beyond B cells, PRDI-BF1 is inducible by viral infection and represses the interferon-β (IFN-β) promoter, ensuring transient cytokine expression. Mechanistically, its amino-terminal repression domain actively silences transcription by recruiting Groucho/TLE family corepressors, enabling long-range repression. Thus, PRDI-BF1/Blimp-1 integrates developmental and antiviral programs by enforcing terminal differentiation, regulating apoptosis, and modulating immune gene expression.
