Description Schizandrol A is one of the effective components in the dried fruit of Schizandra chinensis Bail and works by increasing dopamine, a neurotransmitter, in the brain.
In vivo Schizandrol A could improve the learning-memory dysfunction in mice induced by sodium pentobarbital intraperitoneally injected, and its protective mechanism is related to the effect of lowering oxidative damage and inhibiting the cell apoptosis through up-regulating the expression of Bcl-2 and down-regulating the expression of bax and improving the synthesis of neurotransmitters through increasing the expression of ChAT in the hippocampal CA1 region[2].

  • Cell lines: The SH-SY5Y neuronal cell line
  • Concentrations: 1 or 3 μg/ml
  • Incubation Time: 4 d
  • Method: After 24 h of incubation with or without schisandrin treatment, SH-SY5Y cells are seeded onto 96-well culture plates. Metallothionein (MTT) is added and absorbance values are continually measured for 4 d. All assays are conducted in triplicate. Data are expressed as percent viability. Rate of SH-SY5Y cells proliferation is calculated from optical density (OD) values.
