Description 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP, L-oxitriptan), also known as oxitriptan, is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin.
In vitro

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a 5-HT precursor. In Caco-2 cells, exogenous 5-HTP, which can enter the cells, increases the density of microvilli[1].

In vivo Systemic application of 5-HTP increases the density of microvilli in the mouse intestine in vivo[1] and allows frontal cortical serotonin response to stress in hyperphenylalaninaemic mice[2].
