Biological Activity

L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid precursor and intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin. As an immediate biochemical precursor, 5-HTP readily crosses the blood-brain barrier and is decarboxylated to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) by aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase. Increased central serotonin levels modulate downstream neurochemical signaling, influencing mood regulation, sleep architecture, and neurological homeostasis. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
