L-Carnosine is a dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and histidine. It is an endogenous metabolite found in all vertebrates and is present in human brain, muscle, and gastrointestinal tissues. L-Carnosine acts as a non-enzymatic free radical scavenger and a natural antioxidant. It possesses anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties and can inhibit biochemical changes associated with aging. In vitro studies indicate that L-Carnosine possesses antioxidant properties, primarily mediated through metal ion chelation, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals.
