12.1 Toxicity
Glucosamine's production and use as an antiarthritic and in biochemical research may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. In addition, glucosamine is an important constituent of the cell wall of most microorganisms, and is found in chitin, in mucoproteins, and in mucopolysaccharides. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 9.0X10-8 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates glucosamine will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Particulate-phase glucosamine will be removed from the atmosphere by wet or dry deposition. Glucosamine does not contain a chromophore that absorbs at wavelengths >290 nm and therefore is not expected to be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, glucosamine is expected to have very high mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 10. The pKa of glucosamine is 7.58, indicating that this compound will partially exist in cation form in the environment and cations generally adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces or water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process for the neutral species based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 7.7X10-16 atm-cu m/mole. Volatilization of the cation from moist soil surfaces and from water surfaces is not expected as ionic species do not volatilize. Glucosamine is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based upon its vapor press
12.2 Persistence and degradability

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
Log P (n-octanol/water): -2.8

12.6 Other adverse effects
No other adverse ecological effects identified.
