Tamoxifen is an orally active selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that acts as an estrogen receptor antagonist or agonist in a tissue-specific manner. By binding to the estrogen receptor, it modulates receptor conformation and prevents coactivator recruitment, thereby inhibiting estrogen-dependent gene transcription and cell proliferation. Additionally, tamoxifen enhances Hsp90 molecular chaperone activity and induces apoptosis via activation of caspase-3 pathways in breast cancer cell lines. [1][2]
