12.1 Toxicity
Sildenafil's production and use in the formulation of drugs administered for treatment of erectile dysfunction and hypertension may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 1.9X10-17 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates sildenafil will exist solely in the particulate phase in the ambient atmosphere. Particulate-phase sildenafil will be removed from the atmosphere by wet and dry deposition. Sildenafil contains chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm and, therefore, may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, sildenafil is expected to have no mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 27,000. The estimated pKa of sildenafil is 5.99, indicating that this compound will partially exist in the cation form in the environment and cations generally adsorb more strongly to soils containing organic carbon and clay than their neutral counterparts. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 7.2X10-21 atm-cu m/mole. Volatilization from dry soil is not expected based on its estimated vapor pressure. Biodegradation data were not available. If released into water, sildenafil is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon the estimated Henry's Law constant. An estimated BCF of 30 suggests the potentia
