Biological Activity

Serotonin is an endogenous monoamine neurotransmitter that acts as a broad-spectrum agonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors and an inhibitor of catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT). By engaging multiple G-protein-coupled and ligand-gated 5-HT receptor subtypes, serotonin activates distinct downstream intracellular signaling cascades, regulating critical physiological processes including central neurotransmission, vascular tone, gastrointestinal motility, and mood regulation. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
