5.2 Specific hazards arising from the substance or mixture
Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Wear self contained breathing apparatus for fire fighting if necessary.

5.3 Advice for firefighters
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full protective clothing.
Fight fire from upwind. Cool containers with water spray until fire is extinguished.

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (see Section 8).
Avoid breathing dust/vapor. Ensure adequate ventilation.
Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keep people away from and upwind of spill.

6.2 Environmental precautions
Prevent product from entering drains, waterways, or soil.
Contain spill with inert absorbent material.

6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up
Pick up and arrange disposal without creating dust. Keep in suitable, closed containers for disposal. Do not let product enter drains.
SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational harm/injury/toxicity or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation at places where dust is formed. Normal measures for preventive fire protection
SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants. Ensure that the local ventilation moves the contaminant away from the worker.

12.1 Toxicity
Gossypol's production and use as a chemical intermediate and research chemical may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. It is a natural polyhydroxy dinaphthalene found in cottonseed kernels. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 7.1X10-21 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates gossypol will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Particulate-phase gossypol will be removed from the atmosphere by wet or dry deposition. Gossypol contains chromophores that absorb at wavelengths >290 nm, and therefore may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, gossypol is expected to have no mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 1.2X10+6. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 2.3X10-28 atm-cu m/mole. Biodegradation data were not available. If released into water, gossypol is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon this compound's estimated Henry's Law constant. An estimated BCF of 3,300 suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high, provided the compound is not metabolized by the organism. Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important environmental fate process since this compound lacks functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions. Occ

12.2 Persistence and degradability

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
Log P (n-octanol/water): 6.9
Potential for bioaccumulation exists (Log P > 3).

PBT/vPvB assessment not available.

12.6 Other adverse effects
No other adverse ecological effects identified.
