Biological Activity

Ganciclovir (BW 759) is a nucleoside analogue and antiviral agent that targets viral DNA polymerase, demonstrating inhibitory activity against feline herpesvirus type-1 (FHV-1). Upon intracellular phosphorylation to its active triphosphate form, ganciclovir incorporates into viral DNA to induce premature chain termination and inhibit viral genomic replication. This blocks viral propagation and suppresses virus-induced cytopathic effects in infected host cells. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
