Taurine is an endogenous sulfur-containing amino acid derivative that acts as a cytoprotective organic osmolyte and neuromodulator. It modulates intracellular calcium homeostasis, regulates ion channels, and attenuates oxidative stress through the suppression of reactive oxygen species generation. Additionally, taurine activates GABA and glycine receptors, inhibiting neuronal hyperexcitability and protecting tissues against oxidative damage and apoptosis across various cellular pathways. [1]
