Sulfanilamide is a synthetic antibacterial sulfonamide that acts as a competitive inhibitor of bacterial dihydropteroate synthetase. By competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as a substrate analogue, it blocks enzymatic reactions essential for bacterial folic acid biosynthesis. This inhibition impairs downstream coenzyme production required for the synthesis of purines, pyrimidines, and amino acids, ultimately suppressing bacterial cell proliferation. [1]
