Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestin that acts as a potent agonist of the progesterone receptor. Activation of this receptor modulates gene transcription in target tissues, suppressing gonadotropin-releasing hormone release and blocking the preovulatory luteinizing hormone surge. Downstream signaling alters cervical mucus viscosity and inhibits follicular maturation, ultimately disrupting normal reproductive cell phenotypes and preventing fertilization. [1][2]
