Biological Activity

Berberine chloride is an isoquinoline alkaloid that functions as a dual topoisomerase I and topoisomerase II inhibitor. It suppresses c-IAP1, Bcl-2, and Bcl-xL expression while promoting reactive oxygen species generation, cytochrome c release, PARP cleavage, and activation of caspase-3 and caspase-8. Consequently, berberine chloride modulates autophagy and triggers apoptosis through sustained phosphorylation within the JNK and p38 MAPK pathways. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
