Thimerosal is an organomercury compound functioning as an antiseptic and antifungal agent. It induces intracellular calcium release through the sensitization of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors and promotes the oxidation of protein sulfhydryl groups. These biochemical disruptions trigger mitochondrial dysfunction, cytochrome c release, caspase-3 activation, and double-strand DNA breaks, ultimately leading to apoptotic cell death in neuroblastoma cells.
