Biological Activity

Thiazolyl Blue (MTT) is a cell-permeable colorimetric tetrazolium dye used as an indicator of cellular metabolic activity and viability. In viable cells, NAD(P)H-dependent cellular oxidoreductase enzymes reduce yellow MTT into insoluble purple formazan crystals. This enzymatic reduction directly correlates with cellular metabolic state and viable cell count, providing a quantitative readout for evaluating cell proliferation, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis across diverse cell-based assays. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
