Taurolidine is a synthetic derivative and broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent with potential antiangiogenic and antineoplastic activities. It exerts its cytotoxic and antibacterial effects by interacting with bacterial cell wall components and lipopolysaccharides, as well as inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation in various tumor cells. In cellular models, taurolidine downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppresses vascular endothelial growth factor signaling, leading to reduced tumor cell survival and inhibition of angiogenesis. Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
