Biological Activity

Steviol is a major metabolite of stevioside that acts as an inhibitor of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and downregulates aquaporin-2 (AQP2). By suppressing CFTR activity, decreasing AQP2 expression, and accelerating AQP2 protein degradation, steviol alters transepithelial fluid transport. These actions attenuate intracellular fluid accumulation and retard renal cyst expansion in epithelial cell models.
