Biological Activity

Sphingosine-1-phosphate is a bioactive lysophospholipid agonist that targets S1P1–5 receptors and functions as a ligand for GPR3, GPR6, and GPR12. Upon binding, it enhances GPR3-, GPR6-, and GPR12-mediated intracellular Ca²⁺ mobilization and modulates downstream G-protein signaling cascades. These responses drive essential cellular phenotypes, including cell proliferation, cell migration, cytoskeletal reorganization, adherens junction assembly, and tissue morphogenesis.[1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
