Biological Activity

Silver sulfadiazine is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent that functions as a topical antimicrobial by slowly releasing silver ions and sulfadiazine. It acts by binding to bacterial cell membranes and nucleic acids, disrupting cell wall structure, membrane permeability, and cellular respiration. This targeted action inhibits DNA replication and folate biosynthesis pathways, leading to potent bactericidal activity against diverse gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria as well as yeast strains. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
