Biological Activity

Sevelamer carbonate is a non-absorbed phosphate-binding crosslinked polymer designed to bind phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract. By selectively binding dietary phosphate through ion exchange, it inhibits systemic phosphate absorption and reduces serum phosphorus accumulation. Beyond phosphate management, sevelamer carbonate interacts with intestinal bile acids, promoting their excretion and leading to downstream reductions in circulating total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
