Ronidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative that acts as an antiprotozoal agent. It undergoes intracellular reduction by anaerobic protists to generate reactive nitro radical intermediates. These reactive species cause oxidative stress and induce double-stranded DNA cleavage, thereby inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to protozoal cell death. Through this pathway, ronidazole exerts potent antiparasitic effects against various protozoan organisms, including Tritrichomonas foetus.
