Biological Activity

Protocatechuic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic acid with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. It modulates key signal transduction pathways, including the NF-kB and MAPK signaling cascades, thereby attenuating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6. Additionally, protocatechuic acid scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulates endogenous antioxidant defenses, exerting neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and chemopreventive phenotypes across various in vitro and in vivo models. FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
