Biological Activity

Phenibut is a central nervous system depressant and GABA analogue that acts as an agonist at GABAB receptors and an inhibitor of voltage-gated calcium channels containing α2δ subunits. By activating GABAB receptor signaling and dampening presynaptic calcium influx, it reduces excitatory neurotransmitter release in neural circuits. This attenuation of central excitability mediates pronounced anxiolytic, sedative, and neuroprotective downstream phenotypes in central nervous system pathways. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
