Biological Activity
Pentosan polysulfate sodium is an orally bioavailable, semi-synthetic sulfated polysaccharide exhibiting anti-inflammatory, pro-chondrogenic, and antiviral activities. It inhibits catabolic cartilage enzymes, including aggrecanases ADAMTS-4 and ADAMTS-5 as well as matrix metalloproteinases MMP-3 and MMP-13, preventing extracellular matrix degradation. Furthermore, it suppresses inflammatory signaling pathways and blocks viral replication, supporting extracellular matrix integrity and chondrocyte survival. [1]
