Biological Activity

Oxalacetic acid is an endogenous metabolic intermediate in the citric acid cycle and a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial Complex II (succinate dehydrogenase). By reacting with acetyl-CoA via citrate synthase to form citrate, it plays a key role in cellular energy metabolism, gluconeogenesis, the urea cycle, glyoxylate cycle, and the synthesis of amino acids and fatty acids. Its inhibition of Complex II modulates succinate oxidation and mitochondrial electron transport. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
