12.1 Toxicity
Nerol's production and use as a fragrance ingredient, as an intermediate in the synthesis of other fragrance chemicals and as a flavoring compound in foods may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. Its use as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes and household products will result in its direct release to the environment. Nerol has been identified as a component of tobacco smoke. Nerol occurs in many essential oils in small quantities where it is always accompanied by geraniol. Nerol has been detected in a wide variety of plants and species. If released to air, an extrapolated vapor pressure of 0.03 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates nerol will exist solely as a vapor in the atmosphere. Vapor-phase nerol will be degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals; the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 2.1 hours. Nerol is also degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with ozone and nitrate radicals. The half-lives for the reaction with ozone and nitrate are estimated to be 19 minutes and 4 minutes, respectively. The nitrate radical is the dominant atmospheric oxidant during the night-time in most atmospheric environments, therefore, night-time degradation appears to be a major fate process for nerol. If released to soil, nerol is expected to have high mobility based upon an estimated Koc of 94. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Hen
