Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant that acts as a potent antagonist of central presynaptic α2-adrenergic receptors and postsynaptic 5-HT2, 5-HT3, and H1 histamine receptors. By blocking α2-auto- and heteroreceptors, mirtazapine enhances central noradrenergic and 5-HT1A-mediated serotonergic neurotransmission. Furthermore, antagonism of 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors selectively modulates downstream serotonin receptor pathways to alter neurochemical signaling. [1][2]
