Biological Activity

Micafungin Sodium (FK-463) is an echinocandin antifungal compound that acts as a selective inhibitor of 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthase. By blocking the synthesis of 1,3-beta-D-glucan, a critical structural polymer in the fungal cell wall, it compromises structural wall integrity. This inhibition impairs cell wall assembly, resulting in osmotic instability, severe cell wall deformation, and subsequent fungal cell lysis.

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
