Biological Activity

Melittin is a peptide activator of low molecular weight phospholipase A2 (PLA2) that selectively stimulates low molecular weight PLA2 activity without increasing high molecular weight enzyme activity. By interacting with lipid bilayers, melittin promotes phospholipid hydrolysis and triggers intracellular cascades associated with arachidonic acid liberation. Downstream of PLA2 stimulation, melittin alters membrane permeability and induces cell lysis across various cellular systems. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
