Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant compound that acts as a voltage-gated sodium channel blocker and an inhibitor of monoamine uptake. It exhibits use- and voltage-dependent blockade of sodium channels, leading to suppression of high-frequency repetitive action potentials and inhibition of excitatory neurotransmitter release, such as glutamate. Additionally, it inhibits 5-hydroxytryptamine uptake in neuronal synaptosomes and platelets, contributing to its broad-spectrum neuroprotective and anticonvulsant phenotypes. [1][2]
