Biological Activity

Iron sucrose is an intravenous iron complex that serves as an iron replenishment agent to treat iron deficiency anemia. Upon administration, the polynuclear iron(III)-hydroxide core is taken up by reticuloendothelial system macrophages, releasing elemental iron into the intracellular pool. This iron is subsequently bound to transferrin for transport to bone marrow, where it is incorporated into hemoglobin to support erythropoiesis and restore functional systemic iron stores. [1]
