Biological Activity

Ionomycin calcium is a potent, selective calcium ionophore and polyether antibiotic produced by Streptomyces conglobatus that exhibits high specificity for divalent cations. By facilitating calcium influx across biological membranes, it stimulates phosphoinositide hydrolysis and activates protein kinase C (PKC) signaling pathways. These cellular events induce interleukin-2 (IL-2) production and IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) expression, thereby promoting T cell activation and lymphocyte proliferation. [1]
