Esmolol HCl is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist that selectively binds to beta-1 adrenergic receptors. Blockade of these receptors inhibits catecholamine-induced activation of adenylate cyclase, resulting in reduced intracellular cyclic AMP levels and suppressed protein kinase A signaling. Consequently, esmolol attenuates sympathetic stimulation in cardiac tissue, reducing sinoatrial node automaticity and slowing atrioventricular nodal conduction. [1]
