Dimercaprol (BAL) is a dithiol acrolein scavenger and heavy metal chelating agent that suppresses HIV-1 replication by inhibiting HIV-1 Tat activity. By scavenging reactive aldehydes like acrolein and disrupting Tat-mediated transactivation, dimercaprol impairs viral gene expression, reduces viral production, and decreases viral infectivity in vitro. These actions highlight its downstream role in mitigating oxidative stress and inhibiting viral transactivation pathways. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
