Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring secondary bile acid and cytolytic agent that acts as an agonist of the G protein-coupled bile acid receptor TGR5. Activation of TGR5 by deoxycholic acid stimulates intracellular cAMP production and downstream signaling pathways, promoting brown adipose tissue thermogenic activity and energy expenditure. Additionally, deoxycholic acid disrupts cell membrane integrity through its detergent properties, leading to localized cytolysis. [1][2]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
