Cetylpyridinium chloride is a cationic quaternary ammonium compound that acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic agent. It interacts with and disrupts bacterial cell membranes and viral lipid envelopes, leading to rapid loss of membrane integrity and cellular lysis. Through these membrane-disrupting mechanisms, cetylpyridinium chloride effectively suppresses bacterial cell viability and inactivates enveloped viruses, inhibiting microbial pathogen colonization.
