Biological Activity

Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that acts as a potent inhibitor of bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). It covalently binds to PBPs, suppressing transpeptidase activity and interrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking within the bacterial cell wall synthesis pathway. This structural disruption impairs bacterial cell wall integrity, resulting in cell lysis and broad bactericidal activity against diverse Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
