Biological Activity

Capecitabine is an orally bioavailable fluoropyrimidine carbamate prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) that functions as a DNA synthesis inhibitor. Upon tumor-selective enzymatic activation to 5-FU, it is metabolized into active metabolites FdUMP and FUTP. FdUMP inhibits thymidylate synthase to suppress DNA synthesis, while FUTP incorporates into RNA strands to disrupt protein synthesis. These combined actions reduce cell proliferation, cause DNA condensation, and induce apoptosis. [1][2]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
