Biological Activity

Calcein (Fluorexon) is a cell-impermeable fluorescent fluorophore and fluid-phase marker used to track and visualize cellular processes such as synaptic vesicle fusion and membrane dynamics. As a hydrophilic fluorescent dye, it serves as a reporter for membrane integrity, cell viability, and liposomal fusion or leakage. When introduced via esterase-cleavable precursors or microinjection, trapped intracellular Calcein emits strong green fluorescence, enabling live-cell labeling and tracking of cytosolic events. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
