Biological Activity
BHQ (2,5-di-t-butyl-1,4-benzohydroquinone) is a potent and selective inhibitor of the sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA). By blocking ATP-dependent calcium sequestration into the endoplasmic reticulum, BHQ disrupts intracellular calcium homeostasis and leads to a rapid elevation of cytosolic free calcium concentration. This sustained disruption of calcium signaling can induce endoplasmic reticulum stress and trigger apoptotic cell death in various mammalian cell models. [1]

Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
- Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
- Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
- For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
- Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
