Biological Activity

Penicillin G Sodium (Benzylpenicillin) is a narrow-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic that targets penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis. By binding to transpeptidases, Penicillin G inhibits the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains within the bacterial cell wall. This disruption weakens the structural integrity of the cell wall, leading to bacterial cell lysis and cell death in susceptible Gram-positive bacteria. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
