ATP disodium is a multifunctional nucleoside triphosphate that serves as the primary intracellular energy currency and a crucial phosphate donor for protein kinases. In addition to powering cellular metabolism and active transport, extracellular ATP functions as an endogenous signaling molecule that activates purinergic P2 receptors (P2X ion channels and P2Y GPCRs), initiating downstream intracellular signaling cascades involved in cell proliferation, neurotransmission, and inflammatory responses.
