Biological Activity

Atenolol is a selective β1 adrenoceptor antagonist that binds human β1 adrenoceptor (log Kd −6.66), human β2 adrenoceptor (log Kd −5.99), and human β3 adrenoceptor (log Kd −4.11). By blocking β1-adrenergic receptors, atenolol inhibits G-protein-coupled signal transduction, reducing cAMP accumulation and PKA pathway activation. This blockade suppresses intracellular calcium influx, ultimately attenuating myocardial contractility and decreasing heart rate in cardiovascular model systems. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
