Biological Activity

Amantadine is an antiviral agent and a selective inhibitor of the influenza A virus M2 proton channel. By blocking the ion channel activity formed by the viral membrane M2 protein, amantadine disrupts ion transport across the viral envelope, preventing viral uncoating and subsequent viral replication. In addition to its antiviral properties, amantadine relieves muscle stiffness, tremors, and movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease. [1]

FAQ
Q: Why does a DMSO stock precipitate in media/saline?
A: It is caused by unheated aqueous media (supersaturation), local solvent shock, or incorrect mixing sequence.
How to fix it?
  • Preheat media/saline to 37°C.
  • Mix rapidly (pipette/vortex) upon addition.
  • For complex mixes, always add the aqueous phase last.
  • Re-dissolve minor precipitates with a 37°C water bath and sonication (≤30 min).
