Allylthiourea is a metabolic inhibitor that selectively targets ammonia monooxygenase to inhibit ammonia oxidation in nitrifying bacteria. By chelating essential copper centers within the active site of ammonia monooxygenase, it disrupts the conversion of ammonia to hydroxylamine. This pathway inhibition selectively suppresses bacterial nitrification processes and reduces microbial oxygen uptake by ammonia-oxidizing populations without impairing nitrite oxidation. [1][2]
