Abacavir sulfate is a synthetic nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) with potent antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Intracellularly converted into its active metabolite, carbovir triphosphate, the compound competes with natural dGTP to selectively inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. This inhibition terminates viral DNA chain elongation, preventing proviral DNA synthesis and ultimately suppressing retroviral replication in host cells. [1]
