Reserpine is an indole alkaloid that acts as a potent inhibitor of vesicular monoamine transporters, particularly VMAT2, as well as multidrug efflux pumps. By blocking vesicular monoamine transport, reserpine prevents the storage of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in presynaptic vesicles, leaving them vulnerable to enzymatic degradation by monoamine oxidase. This vesicular depletion impairs monoaminergic neurotransmission and can be utilized to induce experimental animal models of gastric and intestinal ulcers. [1]
